How Much Should You Tip Movers? A Phoenix Guide
Tipping movers is one of those things nobody wants to ask about directly, so most people either over-tip out of nerves or skip it out of uncertainty. Here's the plain version.
The standard range
15–20% of the total bill is the customary range for a full-service move
$20–$40 per mover for a short job — a labor-only booking or a few hours of loading
$50 or more per mover for a long, hard day: a full house, multiple flights of stairs, a long carry
On a flat-rate or long-distance move, 10–15% is reasonable, split among the crew
There's no obligation. A tip is a thank-you, not a fee. If the crew did the job well, tip accordingly. If they were careless or slow, you're not required to tip at all.
How to split it
Cash, handed to the lead mover with a word about sharing it with the crew, is the simplest method and the one crews appreciate most. If you'd rather add it to a card payment, ask the office how the tip is distributed — at some companies it never reaches the crew.
If you booked through a broker or a third-party platform, remember the people who did the work may be different from the company you paid. Ask who's actually carrying your sofa, and tip them.
When to tip more
A walk-up with several flights of stairs
Extreme heat, which is a real physical factor in Phoenix from May through September
A long carry distance from door to truck
Very fragile or heavy items handled without a scratch
Running past the estimated hours because the job turned out bigger than expected — and the crew stayed cheerful about it
The crew stayed late, on a weekend, or on short notice to finish your move
When not to tip
Items were damaged through carelessness
The crew arrived hours late without any communication
The final bill didn't match the written estimate, with no reasonable explanation
Rude or unprofessional behaviour — including any pressure to tip
If something went wrong, raise it with the company before you pay, and put it in writing. That's a separate conversation from tipping.
The practical version
Have cash ready before the crew leaves, decide your number on the day based on how it went, and hand it over directly rather than promising to add it later. A crew that worked hard and took care of your things has earned it.
